Being someone who likes to travel quite a bit, I’m constantly on the search for new and interesting things to do. That’s why I couldn’t resist a trip to Austria when I learned about the Schafberg Cog Railway.

The Schafberg Cog Railway, found in the beautiful Salzkammergut, is a technological wonder and a tribute to human ingenuity. Schafberg Mountain has been accessible by train since 1893 when it originally opened.

The climb to the peak is worth it only to take in the spectacular vistas of the rolling countryside and little towns along the way. The railway’s cog-driven system provides the propulsion needed to make the ascent of the high incline, making it an engineering wonder in its own right.

The majestic peaks of the Austrian Alps rise on each side of the train as it chugs higher and higher up the mountain. In order to provide a heart-pounding trip, the train travels through tunnels and over bridges.

As you reach the peak, the scenery is spectacular. Everything in every direction is visible from the peak. The crisp mountain air is refreshing, and there’s a noticeable lack of noise and traffic.
